USAID AWARDS GRANTS TO LOCAL

ORGANIZATIONS TO SUPPORT CHILD PROTECTION

 

Sarajevo, July 31, 2007 – The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is pleased to announce that USAID Mission Director Jane Nandy will give grants to assist children without parental care to three BiH non-governmental organizations (NGOs), including Altruist from Mostar, ToPeer from Doboj and Asocijacija Prosperiteta from Zenica on Thursday, August 2, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in Hotel Bosnia in SarajevoAll media are invited to attend.

            The grants, totalling $71,000, are part of USAID's program for the Promotion and Development of Alternative Forms of Care for Children Deprived of Parental Care in BiH.  The grants will be used to improve protection of vulnerable children, especially those at risk of being separated from their parents.

            This program aims to decrease the number of children in institutions who are deprived of parental care.   The project has developed and piloted a foster care model that provides a family environment and promotes the best development environment for children.  The project is implemented by Save the Children UK.  To date, USAID has provided over $1 billion in assistance to support economic, democratic and social progress in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
