Sarajevo, June 19, 2007 – The U.S. Ambassador Douglas McElhaney and Swedish Ambassador Lars-Erik Wingren will speak at the opening of the first Municipal Fair in BiH on Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. in Gradacac. Ambassador McElhaney will talk about U.S. perspectives on governance reforms in BiH, while Ambassador Wingren will launch a study on government structures in BiH. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida), through the Governance Accountability Project (GAP), will also participate. The two-day Municipal Fair is a multi-disciplinary event designed to promote municipalities’ economic, commercial, tourist, and administrative capacities. GAP will organize a number of workshops during the fair, focusing on exchange of best practices and lessons learned through GAP's municipal interventions. The workshops aim to enhance the sustainability of local self-governance progress in both policy and service delivery initiatives. USAID and Sida jointly fund GAP, the $20 million project that assists local governments in BiH to increase their efficiency and accountability.
