PRESS RELEASE

U.S. AMBASSADOR TO INAUGURATE NEW SIGNAGE

FOR NATIONAL MONUMENTS AT SVRZINA KUCA

Sarajevo, June 13, 2007 – The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is pleased to announce that U.S. Ambassador Douglas McElhaney will participate in a ceremony to inaugurate newly-designed information boards for designated national monuments in the Sarajevo area.  Unveiling the first information board will occur on Thursday, June 14, 2007, at 12:30 p.m. at Svrzina Kuca, Glodjina Street 8, in Sarajevo.  All media are invited to attend.

Through its Cluster Competitiveness Activity (CCA), USAID funded a pilot project to install 30 signposts at national monuments in the Sarajevo area.  In cooperation with the BiH Commission for Preservation of National Monuments, CCA developed special signposts that will increase the visibility of cultural and historic sites, marking them as national monuments and providing basic information for tourists.

CCA works to improve tourism sites and events, develop a BiH tourism policy, and train tourism professionals.  USAID supports economic growth in BiH by advancing businesses in the country’s tourism and wood sectors.  To date, the U.S. Government, through USAID, has provided over $1 billion in assistance to support economic, democratic and social progress in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
