CITIZENS BELIEVE STRICTER PUNISHMENTS WOULD HELP CLEAN ENVIRONMENT IN BiH, USAID SURVEY SHOWS

Sarajevo, August 5, 2008 - A public opinion survey funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) showed that 37.5% of BiH citizens believe stricter punishments against those who violate environmental protection laws would be the most efficient way to fight littering.  More than 70% of interviewees say they do not have access to recycling trash bins, and the same number believe they would know how to divide waste properly.

Almost 50% of BiH citizens noticed that the BiH environment is cleaner than it was in previous years.  More than 35% of interviewees say that municipal cleaning actions helped to improve the environmental cleanliness.  Municipalities are followed by efforts by utility companies (17.8%), media reports (11.3%), and public awareness campaigns (10.8%).

Twenty-one percent of interviewees say citizens are responsible for keeping the environment clean.  Citizens are followed by municipal administrations (19%), utility companies (17.4%) and communal police and inspections (12.8%).

This survey measures the results of the USAID-supported “Clean is Beautiful” campaign. The campaign aimed to publicize the urgent need for a clean urban and rural environment in BiH for the benefit of tourism.  It was implemented from autumn 2007 to July 2008 throughout the country, in cooperation with government institutions, BIHPAK association, NGOs, public broadcasters, and more than 20 BiH utility companies.

USAID supports economic growth in BiH by helping to develop the country’s tourism and wood sectors.  To date, the U.S. Government, through USAID, has provided over $1 billion in assistance to support economic, democratic and social progress in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
