PRESS RELEASE
Sarajevo, January 21, 2007 – The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is pleased to announce that USAID Mission Director Jane Nandy will deliver opening remarks at a USAID-supported conference on the future of social dialogue in the Federation. The Federation Minister of Labor and Social Policy will also speak at this event. The conference will start on Tuesday, January 22, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. in Hotel Saraj in Sarajevo. Participants will include representatives from the Federation government, trade unions, employers’ associations, and the International Labor Organization (ILO). The press is invited to attend this event. USAID’s Enabling Labor Mobility (ELMO) project is organizing the conference in Sarajevo to encourage tripartite cooperation and dialogue between the government, trade unions and employers’ associations. This cooperation involves a certain reconciliation of interests whereby governments, employers and workers or their organizations, despite their divergent interests, find areas of common accord in order to obtain advantages for themselves and for society as a whole. Through its ELMO project, USAID is working with local counterparts to reduce barriers to labor mobility in BiH by promoting flexible and diverse forms of labor relations. In addition to efforts aimed at more effective application of labor obligations, ELMO works with institutional counterparts from the the Federation and RS to create a single automated system for the collection of work history information and social contributions. To date, the U.S. Government, through USAID, has provided over $1 billion in assistance to support economic, democratic and social progress in BiH.
