USAID HELPS FEDERATION GOVERNMENT

TO REDUCE TIME NEEDED TO REGISTER BUSINESS

Sarajevo, January 18, 2008 – The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is pleased to announce that USAID signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federation Government to reduce the time needed to register a business in the Federation.

USAID’s Streamlining Permits and Inspection Regimes Activity (SPIRA) and the Federation government will work together to reduce the time needed to register a business by 30 percent and construction permitting by 50 percent.  The aim is to increase the efficiency and transparency of permitting processes and to establish effective and business-friendly inspection systems throughout the Federation.  In cooperation with the Federation Government and institutions, USAID will work to eliminate barriers for small and medium enterprises and will provide technical assistance needed to foster an improved business climate and the creation of new jobs.

“Signing the MoU is a significant step for all of us.  We are looking forward to assisting in removing administrative burdens that affect businesses in this country.  The Federation Government and the private sector’s dedication to this project strongly indicate that our partnership will produce much needed results and improve the business climate in the country,” said USAID Mission Director Jane Nandy.

SPIRA is a four-year activity that aims to improve construction permitting and spatial planning, business registration processes and inspections regimes through reform of the existing legislative framework and administrative practices in BiH.  SPIRA represents a continuation of USAID’s dedication to promote economic growth and job creation, supporting the development of the country’s private sector.  To date, the U.S. Government, through USAID, has provided over $1 billion in assistance to support economic, democratic and social progress in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
